Common Denominator —
Common Denominator: Art and the Contemporary World at the Goethe-Institut is a two-year programme in the Return Gallery. Through exhibitions, seminars, discussions and more, it interrogates what it means now to speak of political solidarity, civic standards or even aesthetic values. It is curated by Art in the Contemporary World, a theory-practice postgraduate MA/MFA programme at the School of Visual Culture, National College of Art and Design, Dublin. The visual identity was inspired by the mathematical origins of the term ‘common denominator’. This led to research of mathematical symbols and notation, delving into fractions, lines of division etc. This pursuit evolved into an exercise in symbol generation and a quest to showcase the common denominator within the wordmark itself. This identity implies a journey or pathway, visually suggesting a link between two points of meaning, or common denominators. The exhibition catalogue was printed by Newspaper Club.
